PACT Receives Endorsement of USD $5 Million Adaptation Fund Project Concept to Support Climate Adaptation of Communities and Naturual Resources

The Protected Areas Conservation Trust (PACT) announces that it has received the endorsement of the Adaptation Fund Board for a Project Concept Note titled “Building Community Resilience via Transofrmative Adaptation”. Additionally, the endorsement comes with the approval of USD $5 Million, for an Enhanced Direct Access Grant which will be applied as an on-granting mechanism for climate finance in country. The primary objective of the project is the protection and restoration of vital ecosystems and ecosystem services for the benefit of local communities that are highly vulnerable to the efects of climate change. The project will be executed by the PACT to support sub-projects for climate adaptation activities in Belize, under five components.

Combating Wildfires through Adaptive Management
Creating Opportunities to Support Alternative Livelihoods
Building National Capacity to Access Adaptation Finance
Community Disaster Risk Management
The PACT thanks all partner agencies that are participating in the project development process, namely the Ministry of Finance, Association of Protected Areas Management Organizations (APAMO), National Biodiversity Office (NBO), National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO), National Hydrological Service, National Fire Serive, Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) and the Caribbean Community Climate Change Centre (CCCCC).

Notes: The Adaptation Fund is an international fund, set up under the Kyoto Protocol of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), that finances projects and programs to help vulnerable communities in developing countries adapt to climate change.
PACT is accredited by the Fund to serve as its National Implementing Entity in Belize, and has a Climate Finance portfolio, which seeks to unlock new funding streams and build national capacity for the sustainalbe management resources, climate change and biodiveristy.
The Ministry of Finance is the National Designated Authority for the Adaptation Fund in Belize and is tasked with the endorsement of all country projects submitted to the Fund.
